A lawn that stayed puddled after every shower was treated with Geo Injector and biochar; within hours the standing water had disappeared and the surface started to dry and firm up.
Project background
This lawn was constantly wet, with puddles that lingered long after the rain stopped, so the area rarely got used. The underlying problem was compacted soil that held on to water instead of letting it drain down through the profile.

Before: persistent puddles and a soft, muddy surface after rain.
Objectives
- Make the surface usable again for day‑to‑day foot traffic.
- Reduce or eliminate surface puddling after typical rainfall.
- Improve soil structure below the lawn without digging it up.
Approach and process
We used the Vogt Geo Injector with enriched biochar to decompact the soil and create permanent pathways for water and air.
- Arrival and access
- The video follows the hose up the drive, through the garden gate and out onto the lawn, showing how we can reach back‑garden lawns without bringing heavy machinery over the grass.
- Geo‑injection on the lawn
- The lance was driven to depth and high‑pressure air was injected to crack and lift the compacted layer, creating fissures and voids in the soil.
- Immediately afterwards we injected an enriched biochar product into those voids; the biochar’s stable, honeycomb structure holds them open and allows water and air to move through more freely.
- What you see on the surface
- In the close‑up video you can see the product breaking back to the surface around the injection points, appearing as small black specks of biochar on the lawn.
- Apart from those small injection marks, the lawn surface is left intact and is usable again straight away.

Results
- Standing water gone
- Before treatment, puddles sat on the surface after every spell of rain; immediately after injection, the water disappeared as it drained into the new channels below the surface.
- Surface starting to dry and firm
- As the soil structure opened up, the surface began to dry more quickly and felt firmer under foot, making the area far more usable.
- Minimal disruption
- The only visible signs of the work were small injection marks and traces of biochar, with no need to strip turf or install new pipe drains.
“After: no standing water, surface starting to dry and much more usable.”

Why this method worked
- Targeted decompaction at depth
- The Vogt Geo Injector allows us to fracture compacted layers below the lawn, including any pan that was stopping water from moving down through the profile.
- Permanent pathways with biochar
- Injected biochar does not break down quickly and its porous structure keeps the fissures open, improving both drainage and aeration over the long term.
- No major excavation
- Because the work is done through small injection points, we can treat established lawns without lifting turf or installing traditional pipe drainage.
