Logs Devon
Our Area of Expertise
We supply barn‑dried hardwood logs sourced only from Devon, carefully dried under cover until they reach 20% moisture content or below. That means your fire lights more easily, burns hotter and produces less smoke, while supporting local woodlands and jobs instead of hauling timber from miles away.
Our logs are naturally air‑dried in barns with plenty of airflow, not force‑dried in kilns. It takes longer, but it keeps extra energy use down and still delivers the “ready to burn” performance your stove needs. If you look after your logs when they arrive, they’ll give you reliable, efficient fires all season.
- Our wood is sold by the cubic metre ensuring a measured load.
- We deliver to your door for free within our local zone
- Our logs have the optimum moisture content for an efficient and long burn
- Woodsure is the DEFRA-recognised certification body responsible for managing and certifying suppliers under the "Ready to Burn" scheme.
We keep our pricing simple and transparent. You’ll always see exactly what you’re getting – the size of the load, the type of wood and whether delivery is included. There are no hidden extras. You’re paying for properly dried, local Devon hardwood that burns cleanly and efficiently, not for bags of damp timber that disappear up the chimney.
For most stoves and open fires, good quality, properly dried hardwood is the best choice. Hardwood is denser than softwood, so you get a steady, long‑lasting burn and plenty of heat from each log. Softwood can be useful for kindling or quick fires, but if you want a hot, efficient fire that keeps going, dry hardwood is the way to go.
All our logs are sourced from Devon woodlands and tree work, then barn‑dried to 20% moisture or below. That combination of species, local sourcing and careful drying gives you an easy‑lighting fire with bright flames and strong heat output.
How much wood you’ll need over a winter depends on how often you light your fire and how well your home holds heat. As a rough guide:
Just weekends and the odd evening: one to two loads for the winter.
Most evenings through the colder months: two to four loads.
Wood burner as a main heat source: several loads across the season.
Because our logs are properly dried to 20% moisture or less, you get more usable heat from each load than from cheaper, damp wood. Tell us how often you use your stove when you order and we can recommend a sensible starting amount so you’re not constantly running out.
Moisture content is one of the most important factors in how well your fire burns. Freshly cut “green” wood can hold a lot of water, and your fire has to waste heat just boiling off that moisture. The result is a cool, smoky fire, blackened stove glass and more deposits in your chimney.
Our barn‑drying process brings the moisture content down to 20% or less, which is the ideal range for modern stoves and open fires. Dry logs light more easily, burn hotter and cleaner, and help keep your flue in better condition. In simple terms: dry wood means more heat in your room and less up the chimney.
You’ll often see kiln‑dried logs advertised, but the real goal with any firewood is the same: logs at or below 20% moisture. We reach that target by barn‑drying our locally sourced timber under cover with good airflow, instead of using industrial kilns.
Kiln‑dried and barn‑dried wood can both perform very well when they are properly dried. We choose the slower, natural route because it keeps energy use and transport miles down while still giving you ready‑to‑burn logs. Stored correctly at home, our barn‑dried Devon hardwood will give you the same kind of easy‑lighting, clean, efficient burn.
Good storage at home is the final step in getting the best from your logs. Even though our wood arrives barn‑dried and ready to burn, it still needs to stay dry and well ventilated.
Stack your logs off the ground on pallets or a raised base.
Keep the top covered from rain, but leave the sides open so air can move through the stack.
Avoid wrapping the pile in plastic or shutting it in a damp, unventilated shed.
Bring only a small amount indoors at a time, and keep it away from your stove or open fire.
Look after your logs and they’ll look after your fire: easier lighting, more heat and less soot and tar in your chimney.

Devon Tree Services
Ensures wood fuel is Ready to Burn
As a local provider of wood fuel, Devon Tree Services is making it easy for customers to find wood fuels that have been certified as Ready to Burn and that meet new legal requirements that come into force from 1 May 2021 in England.
Under the new Air Quality (Domestic Solid Fuels Standards) (England) Regulations 2020 that will apply in England from 1 May 2021, wood fuel sold in volumes under 2m3 will need to be certified as Ready to Burn. The new regulations aim to prevent harmful pollution from domestic burning of all solid fuels by ensuring wood sold in volumes of under 2m3 is certified as having a moisture content of 20% or less. Customers buying loose wood in quantities of 2m3 or more must be given advice on how to store and season the fuel, this will give them confidence that the wood they are burning is suitably dry before use.
